SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM

Thanksgiving and the Holidays yet to come are often a mixed blessing as we age. Many elders in our communities could certainly benefit from companionship during these months. There are many elders in Fairfield county that have no family and would enjoy spending some time reminiscing with someone about their family and past Holidays spent with loved ones that are now gone.

The Senior Companion Program, offered through Catholic Social Services, has such a program and we need Volunteers for it here in Fairfield County. The program offers training, stipend pay, and mileage reimbursement. A Volunteer is most often another elder, they seem to work out best as a Companion for this program.  You, as a Volunteer, can provide so much for the elder and it will also help you as an elder yourself as the two of you reminisce about “the good old days.”

Think about it.  Do you have 20 or more hours each week that you could devote to being a Companion?  Could you use the extra income to help with your bills?  Would you enjoy helping a lonely elder reconnect to the world? Do you enjoy talking with others?  Are you a positive person that enjoys life and would like to share your joy with another person?  If you answered yes to these few questions, you may be just what this Program needs. When we give of our time and talents from our heart to help someone it comes back to us ten-fold.  For more information on the Senior Companion Program, Call RITTA SEITZ at your Aging Office.
