The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA) in partnership with Meals on Wheels and the Olivedale Senior Center, arranged for Senator Shaffer to meet with a group of local citizens at the Senior Center recently. The primary discussion centered on service needs of older adults.

Ritta, Aging Services Division Director at Meals on Wheels, shared information on the agency’s many programs with the Senator. She and Bill, Administrative Assistant, took him on a tour of both Agencies after which the Senator enjoyed a lunch featuring ham and sweet potatoes with the Congregate Clients at Sister Lucille’s Place.  Everyone came away from the meeting with renewed hope for positive changes.

Recent funding cuts by the State have drastically reduced the number of older adults that can be transitioned into the PASSPORT home care program. This has resulted in wait lists and unnecessary nursing home placements. Cindy Farson, Executive Director of COAAA,, thanked Senator Shaffer for co-sponsoring SB 214, which allows for immediate PASSPORT enroll-ment for people most vulnerable to nursing home placement, in spite of the wait list.

Senator Shaffer also spoke about the importance of adult protective services and helping older adults in the community that are in danger of emotional, financial or physical harm.
